The Limacol Caribbean Premiere League (CPL T20) kicks off today at the National Cricket Stadium in St. George’s Grenada!
Cricket in Jamaica
Two years ago had you asked me about cricket in Jamaica, my response would have been ” Umm, it’s that game with the funny bats, kinda like baseball, but not really. Right?”
Luckily living in Jamaica, I’ve grown to appreciate and somewhat love this sport. Last summer, I attended my very first live cricket match on the mound at Sabina Park (Kingston, Jamaica) and met West Indies super fan, Peter Matthews and others eager to convert me.
Throughout 2014, I found myself following Indian Premier League matches and dying to get back to South Africa to see the Proteas play live (fingers crossed for 2015). I’ve picked up on the rules and have been eagerly awaiting more cricket in Jamaica (and other islands) this summer with CPLT20.
What is cricket?
For those not familiar with the sport, cricket is a ball and bat game first played in England in the 16th century and became the country’s national sport by the end of the 18th century. Spread of the British empire led to the sport being played all over the world and it’s now most popular in England, India, Australia, South Africa and the West Indies. To learn more about how the game is played, check out this explanation of cricket from the Purdue University team.
Cricket may not be your thing (yet), but if you are a fan of Jamaican culture, sports (beyond track and field) are a big part of it. The film Fire in Bablyon might also/alternatively be of interest. It’s a 2010 British documentary about the record-breaking West Indies cricket team of the 1970s and 1980s. I’ve only seen snippets of the film, but it looks like a great watch. Check out the trailer below.
